5 Ways To Diagnose AC Issues

In SW Florida, our AC is literally our best friend. With our tropical environment, we depend on our AC to keep us cool every day. After all, who has time to deal with an AC unit breaking down? Even a short wait for AC repairs can leave your home hot, sticky, and uncomfortable.

If your AC unit is not cooling properly, here are five potential culprits and what to do about each one.

Replace Air Filter

If your AC is running but not cooling properly or has poor airflow, check the air filter. If it is dirty or clogged, simply replacing it may solve the issue.

Investigate The Outdoor Condenser

Make sure debris, bushes, grass, and other obstacles are at least 2 feet clear of the outdoor unit.

This will ensure proper airflow through the condensing unit (which helps cool the compressor).  While you are there, go ahead and check the coils. If they look dirty or clogged, it’s time to call an expert technician from Sunset Air and Home Services for a professional cleaning.

Check Thermostat Settings

First, if your thermostat runs on batteries, replace them.  Then, be sure it is set to “Cooling” mode with the fan set to “Auto.”

If everything seems correct on the thermostat and the issue continues, it is time to call one of our expert technicians.

Reset The Breakers

If your AC is not cooling, one or more of your AC breakers may have tripped. Resetting them may allow it to start normally.

Before resetting the breakers, turn your thermostat off.  Then, find the breakers in the main service panel and switch them off, then back on to reset them. Wait about 20 minutes before turning the thermostat back on to the “Cooling” mode.

If you are still having issues, or the breaker trips again, call us. There may be other electrical issues going on that only a trained technician can diagnose.

Air Ducts

Air ducts are the pathways for cooled air to make its way through your home. Dirt, blockages, and leaks are all potential culprits which can reduce cooling.

And, if not fixed correctly, they can contribute to a breakdown, leading to AC repair. If you feel like you don’t have proper air flow, call us. Don’t do it yourself. We will tackle this issue for you.

Regular Maintenance To Avoid AC Repair

Just like your car, your AC needs regular attention. One of the best ways to avoid AC issues and breakdowns is to schedule regular maintenance with Sunset Air and Home Services. We recommend at least two visits a year.
