It has been quite a journey for owner, Jason Schreyer. The company has faced many adversities, yet under Jason’s leadership, this organization has withstood unparalleled challenges, evolving into one of the top air conditioning companies in SW Florida.
When Jason first started in the AC business at 18 years old, he knew in order to be successful, it would be imperative for him to understand the art of running a business. With a mentor on his side, and the willingness to learn, Jason became an expert craftsman in the trade, and quickly acquired the secrets to running a business.
Over the years, Jason developed a vision of his own; to create an organization where the customer is #1 priority. In 1999, he took a leap of faith and started Sunset Air and Home Services.
During the boom, he and his partner grew the business quickly from a handful of employees to nearly 120 in 2006. He was building his dream, building relationships, and practicing his values. And business was going well.
Then the recession hit in 2008 and Jason was faced with many unprecedented challenges, most importantly, how to preserve his business.
If he wanted to remain open and continue serving his customers, he had to make some difficult decisions. “One of the worst things I had to do was layoff close to 80 people. It was not just 80 people, it was 80 families.” As stressful as it was, he had to move forward and make more changes. He dissolved his partnership, sold the original building, changed his business model from new construction to retail, and internally created all new sales tools for his team members. Nonetheless, financial difficulties were setting in. Despite well-intentioned advice from professionals, Jason took it upon himself to find a resolution that would keep the company solvent. He contacted each vendor, and over time, satisfied his financial responsibilities.
In 2010, Sunset Air and Home Services was inundated with requests to once again serve the new construction market. Builders respected Sunset Air.
Jason was honest, had solid labor connections and incredible industry knowledge. In response to their needs, he decided to open a separate company exclusively for new construction. Even though the company was successful, he ultimately closed this division, to remain true to his vision of offering the best AC installation, service, and maintenance in the area.
Despite these obstacles, Sunset Air has made a come-back stronger and wiser. Today, the company is diversifying into other home improvement products and services to help meet the needs of their current and future customers.
With nearly 55 employees, some of which have been with him since the beginning, this organization has a bright future. “I’m fair and firm and I think that’s something they respect. I’m grateful for my team. Some of these employees have stuck with me through the hard times, and I know I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for their passion and loyalty.”
Jason’s values were instilled in him as a young boy working at his family’s marina. He ensures these same values are integrated throughout his company and with every team member, “I was taught to persevere, be grateful, always take the high road, and continue to move forward. It’s not always easy, but it is important to take a stand and do the right thing.”
Giving Back to the Community
The company has always believed in giving back, supporting countless charity organizations, including Builders Care, Ronald McDonald House Charities SWFL, 4-H groups, local youth football and basketball teams, and community events.
Jason recalls the first Lee BIA Builders Care project, “I was asked to donate time and materials to help a paraplegic who was confined to a wheelchair. It was an extraordinary experience; and I’ve been involved ever since.”
Sunset Air was recently awarded the 2019 Super Service Award from Angie’s list, and continues to receive 5-star reviews from their clients.
“I run an ethical operation. My customers, employees, and vendors have always depended on Sunset Air to deliver the best products and service in a timely manner. They know when I say I’ll do something, I’ll do it.”
Yes, it has been quite a journey for Jason, and there’s more to come. In fact, just last year he opened Sunset Custom Cabinetry, a full-service, custom woodworking shop, where his master craftsmen use state-of-the-art equipment to help clients implement their remodeling ideas, from kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, to furnishings, and closet storage solutions.
Celebrating 21 years in business this year, Sunset Air & Home Services has helped thousands of SW Florida residents remain comfortable and safe in their homes with expert service, industry-leading AC systems, and a portfolio of home improvement products.
