Tip #6 – Improve Air Flow
Air conditioners need an adequate amount of air flow around all sides in order to perform at peak efficiency. To accomplish this, keep the area around your outdoor unit clear of debris on a regular basis.
For example, trim bushes, trees and other plants away from the condenser unit. In fact, experts recommend that landscaping and other objects be placed about three feet away from the condenser unit.
Tip #7 – Keep Interior Doors And Vents Open
In general, it is best to keep vents open to ensure your unit operates efficiently. When you close some of your registers, it can cause “hot spots” in your home, and potentially affect air balancing throughout your home.
Also, keep your interior doors open as often as possible to allow air to flow freely from room to room. This will make it easier for your air conditioner to cool your home evenly and with less energy.
Tip #8 – Add Window Treatments
Window treatments can help keep your home cool and your bills in check. The Department of Energy says that smart management of window coverings can reduce heat gain by up to 77%.
There are many choices on the market today to fit your style. Window treatments range from blinds, shades, and curtains, to shutters and drapery. Whichever you choose, be sure to keep your windows covered during the day, especially those with a direct sun exposure.
Tip #9 – Switch To LED Bulbs
LED bulbs use 75% less energy and last two times longer than traditional bulbs. They also generate less heat and help maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.
Adding LED bulbs is easier on your AC and will help save you money.
Tip #10 – Maintain Your AC Equipment
One of the easiest ways you can help keep your AC running smoothly and reduce your energy bill is by replacing your air filter regularly. This simple task will help to minimize your system clogging up with fine particles and other materials that a filter is designed to remove.
