The Common Way To Heat Your Florida Home

Most AC units sold and installed in Southwest Florida are designed for cooling; yet they also include built-in “heat strips” for heating during those rare, chilly Florida evenings.

This is the most common way people in SW Florida heat their homes. The heat strips are built-in and look like red metal coils you see in a powered space heater or a blow dryer. This heating element uses the air handler to distribute heat throughout your home. Essentially, it converts your existing air handler into a small-scale electric furnace very efficiently.

Heating Your Home The First Time

Typically, these electric heat strips are enough to keep you comfortable in the tropics of SW Florida, since the heat is not used very often.

They are not as powerful as other sources like a heat pump, but they do the job of taking the chill off the air. And, since they only use coils to generate heat, it takes a few minutes longer to heat up your home. Typically, it takes about 30 minutes with electric vs. 15 minutes with gas.

PRO TIP: When you turn on your heater for the first time, it is normal to notice a “burning” smell. A system that has been dormant accumulates dust which burns up, causing a short-lived burning odor.

Leave it on for a full cycle and the odor should fade. If it continues, contact us, 239.693.9005.

Apart from size, it is important to consider a variable speed HVAC unit to save energy and for maximum efficiency.
