The Truth Behind AC Warranties (Part 1)
The truth behind AC warranties is something we all want to know. After all, purchasing an AC unit is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home! And, the right warranty can make your life easier by helping to lower your out-of-pocket repair expenses and minimize your frustration when your AC stops performing.
So how do you know which is right for you? Determining which warranty to get and what it all means can be overwhelming. Therefore, in this blog we address a few questions to reveal the truth behind AC warranties (Part 1).
Here are a few truths you need to know.
The Truth Behind AC Warranties (Part 1): I just bought an AC unit. What warranties are included?
Many people assume their AC unit automatically comes with a 10-year warranty, however; there’s more to the story. Let’s break it down and see how it works –
Manufacturer Warranty. The manufacturer of the equipment includes a standard 5-year warranty, on parts only with your purchase. For example, AC manufacturers include companies such as Trane, Daikin, Lennox, and Ruud. Keep in mind, these are Limited Warranties. Furthermore, this means they do not cover everything that can go wrong with the equipment, at any time, or for any reason. There are exclusions and limitations. Do yourself a favor and review the contract thoroughly.
TIP – Choose an AC company you trust to walk you through the fine print of warranties.
How to get a 10-year warranty.
To receive an additional 5-year term on your warranty at no cost, simply register your AC unit with the manufacturer. (See “How to Register my AC unit” in Part 2 for more info on the process.)
TIP – Some AC companies, like Sunset Air and Home Services, will register your unit for you during the purchase. Regardless which party does this, it is your responsibility to make sure it happens. Don’t take the chance of losing half of your warranty. Choose an AC company that goes the extra mile, taking care of this step for you.
Dealer Warranty. In addition, you also receive a 1-year warranty on labor from the Dealer where you purchased your unit. This coverage begins at installation. Every Manufacturer (i.e. Trane) requires the Dealer (Sunset Air and Home Services) to provide a 1-year warranty on labor.
This means if your AC fails due to a defective component or part, the AC company will only replace it at no cost during the first year. After that, labor charges are your responsibility.
