Why Is MY AC Running Constantly? (1 of 2)
Today’s blog post is part 1 of 2.
In the tropics of SW Florida, it is common for our AC units to run longer than normal to keep up with the hot temperatures. However, when it’s not especially hot outside during the winter months and your AC is running constantly, then there may be an issue.
Before you call for AC Repair, review these common culprits.
Have you recently purchased a new AC unit and it is running nonstop? Here are two possible culprits:
AC Running Constantly Could Be Incorrect Thermostat Settings
One common reason an AC runs continuously is the thermostat may have been inadvertently adjusted to the ON position. When set to ON, the AC blower is told to run constantly, even if the desired temperature has been reached.
Check the setting and be sure it is set to AUTO. This will help you avoid calling for AC Repair.
Setting it to AUTO tells the blower to only run as needed. This correct setting reduces wear-n-tear on your unit and saves you money on your monthly utility bill.
If it is set to AUTO and continues to run, then double-check the temperature setting.
Your AC unit can only handle a specific temperature difference between your home and the outdoors.
The general rule of thumb is to set the thermostat to no more than 20 degrees less than the outside temperature. Otherwise, your AC will kick into high gear and run constantly to try and keep up.
This may lead to calling us for AC Repair.
An Undersized AC Can Cause It To Run Constantly
When a new AC is installed, your contractor will verify the unit size is correct for your home.
If your air conditioner is too small, it will run continuously to try and meet your desired temperature. The only solution is to install a properly sized AC unit in your home.
Here are a few other possible issues:
Neglected Maintenance Can Cause Your AC To Run Constantly
One common offender is dirty or dusty components.
If your system hasn’t received regular maintenance, this can cause the unit to work harder and run endlessly, possibly resulting in AC Repair. Here’s what to do:
- Change your air filter regularly.
- Clear debris away from your condenser unit outside.
3. Call us to have the evaporator coils and other components cleaned and your system tuned up.
This will help you avoid AC Repair and potential major issues down the road.
